How To Make a Perfume – Getting To Know Your Materials

The aromatic materials used to make perfume are categorised by the way they last in the air and on skin.

The oils and materials that last the longest are called base notes and generally make up 40-55% of the blend. These are the notes that last longest on the skin as they are the least volatile (take the longest to evaporate). Natural base notes include sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla, vetiver, labdanum and oak moss as well as some of the more exotic materials such as cognac, tobacco, tea and spruce.

The materials that will give your perfume its character are the middle or heart notes, they will be around 20-30% of your finished fragrance concentrate. Heart notes determine the nature of the finished perfume and will pretty much always have floral elements such as rose, jasmine & ylang but could also include spices such as cinnamon or clove and herbal notes such as basil and clary sage.
The final 25-35% of your perfume should be made up of top or head notes.  These are the materials that give the first impression of your fragrance but will disappear quite quickly on skin. They are the most volatile and include all the citrus oils as well as spices like nutmeg and black pepper.

Learn how to make perfume for women

There is no doubt that women designer perfumes can be quite costly. Anything of high quality normally comes with a hefty price tag. So if you do not mind wearing an inexpensive perfume then you should keep your options open especially when you do not have much to spare. Wearing a perfume is all about finding the scent that you like best. So what if the perfume does not have a famous label on it. As long as it smells good and lasts reasonably long, there is nothing cheap about wearing inexpensive or homemade perfumes.

How to make perfume: Orange Blossoms Perfume Recipe

What you need:

2Cups of Orange blossoms
Glycerin
Water

Directions:

Collect several bunch of fresh orange blossom and trim the stems and leaves.

Set a piece of cheesecloth in a bowl so that the edges of the cloth hang over the edge of the bowl.

Place 2 cups of fresh orange blossoms in the bottom of the bowl on top of the cheesecloth. Pour in enough water to cover the flowers, and allow the blossoms to soak overnight.

Gather the ends of the cheesecloth and secure the orange blossom inside with a knot. If necessary, you may tie the cheesecloth with a rubber band or piece of string.

Pour the water into a small cooking pot, placing the orange blossoms wrapped in cheesecloth in the water. Allow the water to simmer until about 1 or 2 tsp. remain.

Cool the perfume and pour into a small dark glass bottle with a tight fitting lid. Add three drops of glycerin, a fixative that will help your orange blossom perfume to retain its scent.

Store your orange blossom perfume in a cool dry location to extend its shelf life.



How to make perfume: Orient Nights Perfume Recipe

What you need:

2 full teaspoons of jojoba oil
4-5 drops of musk essential oil
4 drops of Sandalwood/fragrance essential oil
3 drops of fragrance oil or frankincense essential oil

Directions:

Mix all oils with Ethyl alcohol in a bottle. Leave it for 10 hours. Store in a cool dry place. You can use the product for one month.


How to make perfume: Misty Passion Recipe

What you need:

3 drops passionflower essential/fragrance oil
2 drops ylang ylang essential/fragrance oil
3 drops neroli essential/fragrance oil
1/2 pt (300ml) 70 percent alcohol or vodka

Directions:

Pour the alcohol into a dark bottle or jar. Add the oils and shake well. Leave for 1 week. Store in a cool dry area.


How to make perfume: Enchanted Perfume Recipe

What you need:

2 cups distilled water
3 tablespoons vodka
5 drops everlasting essential/fragrance oil
10 drops peony essential/fragrance oil
10 drops sandalwood essential/fragrance oil

Directions:

Mix all the ingredients together, shake well. Place in a dark color bottle. Then allow the perfume to settle for at least 12 hours. Store in a cool dry area.

How to make your Own Homemade Aromatherapy Perfumes

Making your own homemade aromatherapy is not only fun but also extremely satisfying as well. These aromatherapy perfumes would enhance a person’s good mood, provides some extra energy and helps you relax.

These homemade aromatherapy recipes I’m going to provide below are very much simple to make and easy to follow. Choose which perfume recipes you most likely to follow or choose a recipe where materials are readily available for you to start.

By following the simple instructions below, you will soon be making your very own homemade aromatherapy perfumes.



First, you need to have a base (To learn more about base notes, please visit the topic about the Difference between Perfume and Cologne ). It can either be an alcohol or carrier oil. For best result, a combination of alcohol and carrier oil would be great. The best alcohol to use is an odorless alcohol. That is why I prefer using Vodka and mix it with Jojoba oil which is my carrier oil. Jojoba is quite expensive since it has a long shelf life, and once applied to skin and dries out it would leave a sweet soothing scent behind. This doesn’t limit you from using jojoba oil only. You could use other less expensive oils such as almond or apricot kernel oil.

Basic Instruction in making your Homemade Aromatherapy Perfume

1. Prepare you perfume bottle container. (Preferably dark glass bottle)

2. Measure 1teaspoon of your carrier oil (Jojoba, Almond, or Apricot kernel oil) and another 1teaspoon of alcohol (Vodka). Using a funnel pour these two ingredients in your bottle.

3. Add the essential oils from your chosen recipe listed below. You may need a dropper since not all essential oil bottles comes with a dropper. Once you have finished adding the last drop of essential oil, close the lid tightly and shake well.

4. Store it in a cool dark place. You need to store your mixture for 12 days or more before you have to use it. Try to remember to shake the bottle at least every 4 days.

5. After 12 days, you can now begin to enjoy the aromatherapy that you have made.


Homemade Aromatherapy Recipes

The following recipes have been designed to help produce much more calming effect to the person using it. These homemade perfumes will help you to focus on your inner self, and provide you a feeling of security, which will promote a feeling of total relaxation.

4 drops of Cedarwood

How to make perfume: I’m going to share to you a special recipe in making your own homemade perfume, now that we already have some knowledge about Essential oils and Fragrance oils from my previous post.



I call this special recipe because perfumers classify this to be among the love potion group of fragrance.
